In my experience this type of thing works best after a thorough defrag. I found this page of freeware defraggers on the same site:

I've not used any of those listed, but improving on XP's inbuilt defragger can't be hard as it's shite (but not as shite as the last Norton one I tried)

On the de-fragging front, I find that Piriform's "Defraggler" does a very good job on my partner's Windows laptop.

Piriform are the same lot that do CCleaner which is one of those 'must have' applications.

The original technique for hard disc defraggling is very thorough. Piriform have just jumped on the bandwagon and nicked the name.
